Coyotes #1 Howls At Horror

Who Needs A Wall When You Have Wolves?

Coyotes Image Comics

Another New Comic Book Day means another Image Comics series debut! This Wednesday we welcome to our shelves Coyotes #1from creators Sean Lewis (who brought us the kickass The Few, which if you haven’t read, you should totally read!) and newcomer artist Caitlin Yarsky. Part gritty cop drama, part survivalist tale, this series is all kinds of intense! Dare to to have a taste?

The pitch all the solicits make is “Underworld” meets “Sicario.” I’m sold! Two crazy good movies for completely different reasons. I love me some supernatural mysteries. I love gritty relevant crime sagas. I compliment whoever came up with that pairing because I’m going to be using that to shout its message all week long. A small border town is being hunted by a legion of wolves (a legion of doom, one might say?) and women are disappearing all the time. The survivors must come together to wage war against the beasts. Who will be the true monster by the tale’s end?

All the meanwhile, Detective Frank Coffrey is going to have to wrap his mind around a bloodbath of mythic proportions when he comes across one survivor, Red, a little girl with a secret and a sword. Because they both start with the letter “S” and conjures up cool imagery. Expect ultra violence and a potentially super relevant social backdrop. And did I mention blood? Because it feels like there’s probably going  to be a lot of blood in this one. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just a good idea to be upfront about it.

New series are a judgment call. There are new stories starting every week that compete for our attention. Will this one be worth the dive into a new world? Will Red and Detective Coffrey find a place in our nightmarish hearts? Is Coyotes #1 the next must read series from the creator-owned paradise that is Image Comics? Only one way to find out!
