Hour of Devastation is Upon Us

Magic the Gathering HoD Hour of Devastation mtg

Magic The Gathering’s summer set for 2017, Hour of Devastation, is here and as always Forbidden Planet NYC is fully loaded with booster boxes, booster packs, bundles and Planeswalker decks.

The return of Nicol Bolas is at hand, can anyone on the Egyptian-inspired plain of Amonkhet stop him!?
Welcome to Magic The Gathering’s Hour Of Devastation: Nicol Bolas has finally returned to Amonkhet and nothing will every be the same again. With all new new cards, mechanics, powers and abilities, the cards from the Hour Of Devastation set can help you buff your existing Magic deck or create a new one from scratch. Look for ultra-rare Masterpiece Invocations!

Here’s a quick rundown of cards that caught my eye. Many players consider these the best Hour of Devastation cards out there (for now – the longer these cards are out there the more players have a chance to come develop new and exciting combinations, sometimes even with seemingly crappy commons).

Bontu’s Last Reckoning

Bontu's Last Reckoning MTG Hod Hour Devastation3 mana for a board-clearer’s pretty darned good if you’ve got the extra lands late and/or upcoming cheap effective spells to potentially skip a turn. Plus, I loooove the art.

Hour of Devastation

Hour of Devastation Red Card Magic the GatheringI used to rock straight red decks when I played MtG extensively, but this card (another board-clearer that excludes Nicol himself) looks like a handy tool to whip out for a game reset for nearly any deck that splashes red as well.

Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh

Nicol Bolas Planeswalker card Devastation MtgI’m over the age of 18 so I’m not easily impressed by big creatures. Neither facing them nor using them. Nor have I ever been a fan of tri-colored decks. However, there are a few ways to get around Bolas’ casting limitations (dual-lands etc) (also, it seems to me that with the release of Hour of Devastation there’s some great control options out there to make carrying such a unwieldy amount of different mana around worth it… if control’s your thing) that make this card a BEAST. Look at his Planeswalker abilities. Yao Ming(!), he’s a game-changer!

Abrade

Mtg Abrade Magic the Gathering Red Card“But foist, ya gotta get speed. Demon speed. Speed’s what we need. We need greasy fast speed!” Good old red.

The Scarab God

Zombie decks used to be all the rage with the kids back in the day. Perhaps they will be again.

I’m sure there are some quality green and white cards out there, but they’re not really my thing. Have fun!
