Welcome back, Rocket Girl! You’ve been sorely missed. This week in Rocket Girl #8, it’s been promised that “DaYoung Johansson relaunches her investigation into crimes against time as the teen-cop-from-the-future’s adventures in the ’80s pick up” according to solicits. What’s this mean? Well, more epic period meets sci-fi artwork from the incomparable Amy Reeder. Plus, the wit and heart of Brandon Montclare’s words. AND we can finally march towards the finale of the series’ second arc! All in all, it means a lot goodness. The question to answer is, can you jump back in after all this time?

Creator-owned series sometimes have a track record of taking long breaks between arcs or issues. See Jupiter’s Legacy for a prime example from Image Comics. Heck, Stray Bullets had ten years between issues. Fortunately, the wait hasn’t been that long for the continued adventures of Rocket Girl. Still, it’s been a while. Will it be worth the wait? Will you remember where you left off? Can the issue fill you in since in case some of the details might be fuzzy?

Delays, it feels like, are part of comics. Plus, from a creator-owned title like Rocket Girl, it’s not ideal but it’s generally forgivable. Creator-owned series are relying on sales to pay the bills and when you get a hot series going, sometimes the bigger companies come along with offers you can’t refuse. Case in point, Mr. Montclare and Miss Reeder have been kicking all kinds of butts over in their celebrated Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur for Marvel. Hence the delay in wrapping up the latest installment of DaYoung’s investigations of Quantum Mechanics’ evilness in the 80’s. The head scratching begins when big events or major titles where there are dozens of people employed to make sure each issue gets to the printer on time is delayed for months or more. Not naming any names, you all have just filled in a blank for yourself.

Fortunately, we can celebrate the return of our favorite time traveling adolescent Dirty Harry. Mr. Montclare and Miss Reeder are making a big to-do by coming to Forbidden Planet on August 2nd to sign copies and usher in their series’ return in style. Time to get in your Way Back Machine. We’ll see you there.
