Spider-Men II #2 Thickens Miles’ Mystery

Spider-Men Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Spider-Men II #2 has some ‘splaining to do! The debut issues of this five years in the waiting sequel gave us a few big teases and now we need to get some answers. For those of you who didn’t read the first issue, avert your eyes as we’re going to be discussing some SPOILERS for the next couple of paragraphs. First off, Mister Morales? How did Taskmaster get all powered up? And into that warehouse? And is he going to kick the Spider-Men’s butts? Okay, okay, let’s back up a bit here.

Spider-Men came along in a different time for the Marvel Universe. I mean, there were plenty of different dimensions that housed alternate versions of the most recognizable heroes and villains. One such alternate earth was numbered 1610 and referred to as the Ultimate Universe. In that world, Peter Parker was killed before he was old enough to drink while doing battle with the Green Goblin. A new Spider-Man came along, Miles Morales. Miles dedicated his life to the memory of the original Spider-Man and took up the mantle. Then, Peter Parker of appropriate drinking age found a dimensional portal created by Mysterio and ended up in the Ultimate Universe.

The two had a rollicking romp and Peter returned to the 616 main Marvel earth. At the end of this first story, Peter searched for Miles Morales on his world and was startled at what he found. Now, with this long awaited sequel, we have finally gotten a first look at the Miles Morales of the 616 earth. And he’s way older than the Miles we’ve been following around on adventures. But hey, Peter was way older than his Ultimate counterpart so, fair play. But what’s with this older Miles’ scarred face? Oh, and both Spider-Men totally remember the Ultimate Universe and their original team-up. WHAT?

So many questions, so few answers. Will we just got more headaches? Or is Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli going to deliver some goods this week? Well, to be fair, Pichelli almost always delivers the goods and it’s a pleasure to see her back to work with this duo. Let’s face it, we’re all waiting on Bendis here….Still waiting…
