Val’s Toy Chest- Diamond Select Goes To Asgard

Thor Ragnarok was recently released on home media and Diamond Select has some new merchandise ready to go from the film. One of their longest running lines, Marvel Select sees a brand new Thor figure from the film making his debut on our shelves this week. Thor is featured in his gladiator gear and features several points of articulation, the likeness of actor Chris Hemsworth and some movie-accurate accessories. The Hulk figure from this line did extremely well, so if you loved this film, definitely grab a Thor before they sell out, especially since Diamond rarely reruns the film figures. In addition to the Marvel Select figure, Diamond has also included most of the movie properties in their successful Gallery line of PVC statues. Recent months have seen both Thor and the Hulk from Thor Ragnarok in their Gallery line, but get ready to add a third. Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie from the film has become such a fan-favorite that Marvel is adding her to their comic book continuity and Diamond will have a figure of her in their Marvel Gallery line. Standing atop a base inspired the film, the Valkyrie PVC statue is sculpted to resemble Tessa Thompson’s portrayal of Valkyrie and shows her in an action pose, ready to join your other Gallery figures. If you still need Hulk and Thor from Ragnarok, we still have them in stock.

Switching gears from comic-related films to TV, the CW announced yesterday that they are renewing Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Riverdale and Arrow for another season each. Supernatural will also be back for Season 14(!).  I haven’t talked much about the DC CW shows in recent columns though I still watch most of them but figured I would discuss them briefly since they all got picked up for another year. The best of the bunch is clearly Black Lightning. Cress Williams has done a wonderful job in bringing Jefferson Pierce to life and the show has been amazing in its storytelling and pacing. Nafessa Williams has also been a standout character as Anissa Pierce, whose own heroic journey as Thunder has been a joy to watch. The show definitely stands on its own and I am glad to see it continue for another year.

Legends of Tomorrow has been an action-packed thrill ride this year with the team having to deal with more anachronisms and even the supernatural. Though the worst part of the crossover took place on their show, the rest of Legends has been exciting, especially with the recurrence of Matt Ryan’s Constantine character. Reception to John Constantine has been so good that he was announced as a series regular for Season 4 ahead of the formal renewal announcement. If you like Hellblazer, Legends will have him for you next season.

Supergirl has been on extended break as the CW has a lot of superhero shows to juggle around, but the show will be back to finish out its 3rd season later this month and back for season 4 next year. The Flash I don’t keep up with regularly, and then there’s Arrow. Arrow has largely been a disappointment since the end of season 3 and I gave up on it in season 4 after they killed off Katie Cassidy’s Black Canary. I skipped the rest of season 4 and almost all of Season 5 after that and only picked it up again when they brought Cassidy back as Canary’s doppleganger, Black Siren and made her a regular for Season 6. Season 6 has been a mess with the current Civil War-esque storyline between Oliver’s old and new team, doubling down on the worst aspect of the show(the romance between Oliver and Felicity culminating in their ugh-marriage) and the non-ending to last year’s excellent season finale. The only bright spots this year have been Black Siren and Quentin;s storyline, along with the recent Thea-centric episodes which wrote Willa Holland off the show as a regular castmember. Arrow is also back next year, but I am hoping they move Katie Cassidy to Legends so I can write Arrow off for good.

Anyway- that’s it this week- see you next time!
