Val’s Toy Chest- Gift Guide Part 2- Star Wars

As we get closer to the end of 2017, one of the most anticipated films of the year will be hitting theaters this weekend. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is about to come out and here’s a handy gift guide for the Star Wars fan in your life.

The majority of Star Wars toys are created by longtime license holder, Hasbro, who took over the property when they acquired Kenner back in the 90s. There are also higher-end figures from Hong Kong company Hot Toys which have been very popular in the last few years as well as semi-poseable plastic statues from Kotobukiya and Funko also has a chunk of the Star Wars license too. Let’s take a look at some of the items we currently have available.

Hasbro

Star Wars first debuted 40 years ago in May of 1977 and as I noted above, Kenner created vehicles and figures for the brand new science fiction film. 40 years later, Kenner might be gone, but Hasbro occasionally revives the brand name for use in their vintage series tribute lines. Such was the case for this year’s Star Wars 40th Anniversary Black Series figures which gathered 12 figures from the original film and packaged them on backing cards that resembled the original toyline’s packaging design. One of the key characters of course is Darth Vader and he was made available in a deluxe package that includes a stand to display your figures. Other figures currently available from the vintage wave are Han Solo and R2-D2, though the latter is nearly sold out.

Speaking of Star Wars Black, several of the recent waves have centered on the newer films in the series. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are starting to come together in the toy line with figures of newer characters like Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Poe as well as classic trilogy characters now making more current appearances such as Luke and Leia. Several other major and minor characters also appear from across the entire Star Wars Universe in this line which I would highly recommend, characters like Lando Calrissian, the Imperial Royal Guard, Ahsoka Tano and more. Each figure stands in the 6″ scale and is fully accessorized and articulated.

Hot Toys–

If you’re looking for something a little more high end, you can’t go wrong with the beautifully sculpted Hot Toys figures. Characters currently available in store include Jyn Erso from Rogue One, Luke, Han and Chewbacca from The Force Awakens, Yoda from The Empire Strikes Back along with assorted Storm and Snow troopers. Next year will see more original trilogy characters as well as Last Jedi figures.

Kotobukiya

Mostly two-packs of several key characters in the Star Wars canon, there’s a Rey and Finn two-pack along with a Han and Chewie set, typically each of these PVC statue sets feature interchangeable parts and accessories as well as limited poseability and magnetic bases to stand your figures on.

Funko

Currently producing figures from the newest film, the focus this year has been on the newer characters in the series, including the Porg, Rose, BB-9E as well as new versions of Rey, Kylo and Finn. I would definitely suggest these or either of the Mystery Minis blind boxes as stocking stuffers.

I’ve barely scratched the surface of what we carry for Star Wars, there’s also items such as wallets, Topps trading cards, T-Shirts and Comics, Graphic Novels and Books to fill your Star Wars fans’ needs.

So check out the Last Jedi this weekend and then come check out our selection of Star Wars items as soon as you can!
