What to get after Free Comic Book Day…

Good ole’ Free Comic Book Day has come and gone. What do we have to fill up the void in our hearts that it has left behind? How about this upcoming Wednesday, a day so amazing in its selection of incredible new releases I just had to declare it:  NOT-Free Comic-Book-DAY!

DARK HORSE

Dude, Darkhorse is bringing the thunder! New issues of their two biggest heavy hitters this week in the forms of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #35 and Hellboy in Mexico (One Shot) from Mike Mignola and Richard Corben.

In the sequential pages of his mainstream titles Hellboy has yet to make a trip south of the border. The copy for Hellboy in Mexico promises vampiros, Luchadores, tequila and all manner of wacky hijinx! Looks like we’re in for some Amazing Screw-On Head style weirdness from Mignola, which is to say Mignola at his best!

DC

DC is covering all bets on NOT-Free-Comic_Book-Day, or NFCBD as we can call it. Well, as we can call it SOON, I still have to get in touch with the National Foundation for the Color Blind and Deaf and ask if they would mind terribly if they’d change their acronym.

If you like highbrow comics they’re publishing Joe Kubert’s latest graphic novel Dong Xoai, Vietnam 1965, an incredible true-story of the horrors of war from the master of war comics himself! Anybody who has read any of Joe’s previous stuff knows this is a “not to be missed” debut.

They’re hitting on the speculator crowds as well with the new Brightest Day #1, the new spin-off from the past Green Lantern story arch that had all tongue’s wagging. Ya’ know, cause’ it had zombies.

Then again, let’s not poo-poo the bat books. Comic fans will love Grant Morrison back on Batman and Robin #12 while casual readers might just want to pick up Batman Confidential #44 where Sir Broods-a-lot (a.k.a. the Dark Knight) will be battling Zombies. SIGH… yes Zombies.

IDW

G.I. Joe Origins is a great little comic, and the latest issue, #15, promises to be just as entertaining. SEE the poorly named arctic combat expert Snow-Job have to save a peasant village in Central America…FAR outside his area of expertise. THIS I have got to see!

Also? IDW is publishing adventures of Cameron from Ferris Buller in space! Cameron played a Star Trek Captain in “Trek: Generations” named Harriman, and it seems like poor ole’ Captain Cameron Harriman gets the blame for what happens to Kirk in that particular film. How do you live with yourself when you’re the man who killed Captain Kirk? Find out in Star Trek: Captain’s Log: Harriman #1!

OUT OF ROOM?!

But there’s still Marvel with premiers like Astonishing Spider-Man/Wolverine #1, and Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1! They have new material from Jill Thompson in Girl Comics #2! And DC/Vertigo has new Mike Allred material in a comic called I, Zombie that… REALLY DC? MORE ZOMBIES?!

This NFCBD I’ll definetly be picking up Roger Langridge’s Muppet Show #5, as well as Fantagraphic’s Krazy and Ignatz: 1916-1918 TP. HAPPY NOT-Free-Comic_Book-Day everybody, no matter how you chose to celebrate it!
