Review-tech: Makinami Mari Illustrious Fraulein

If you follow the child-pool depth continuity of this blog, Loran’s off at Otakon this weekend. I like video games, drinking and not dealing with a city where “The Wire” took place, so I’m home this weekend, posting an additional article. But we’re not talking Gunpla today, or even Gundam. Instead, we’re going to focus on the overlooked import toy section of Forbidden Planet NYC! I’m hoping to turn this into a new feature on the blog, as man, I love me some Revoltechs. […]

Review: AMS-110 Geara Doga

After what seems like forever here at the FPNYC blog, we actually have a new Gunpla to discuss! We’ll be looking at the 1/144th scale AMS-110 Gear Doga Neo Zeon Mass Productive Mobile Suit, which aside from a long-ass name, is actually a pretty nifty kit. I’ll also be trying a new review format, so let me here what you think of it in the comment section. […]

Loran’s Otakon Adventure!: Prelude

Well guys, Otakon is drawing near. And by near I mean way too close. It’s funny, up until today it didn’t feel so close, and I wasn’t particularly excited up until today. I’ve gone for several years, but for once there was no actual buildup. Now of course, I go to cons all the time but I never talk about them here. Well, this time is an exception, because as I mentioned before, they’re holding the preliminaries for BAKUC, along with their own model contest. […]

Birds and Gods: Bird Superheroes Dos and Don’ts

Superheroes are thinly veiled caricatures of our own hopes and insecurities. Finding the right balance between subtly recognizing these deep psychological urges and making the character cool is the entire trick to creating interesting and compelling characters. Think of it like making your first mixed drink: You want enough booze in there to knock your socks off, but put too much in and it will taste like liquorices flavored Scope. […]

Hello/Goodbye: New Release Manga Comes and Goes

So, the title for this weeks article is fairly self-explanatory. This week we say farewell to a title as it’s final issue is here, and then we welcome a new title by a couple of your favorite creators. Muhyo & Roji’s Bureau of Supernatural Investigation ends in a blast this week with Volume 18. If you all remember from the last volume everything hit the fan and every able body went to the Magic Law School in Europe that had been overrun by ghosts, and one of those ghosts was sucking the energy out of all the major Magic Law users, oh, and Muhyo could not keep his eyes open and kept falling into a deep sleep. In this final issue Muhyo has finally woken from his long slumber, but will his prodigious display of power be enough to stop Vector? Moreover, will Muhyo and Roji be able to keep it together when it seems like everything and everyone is threatening to drag the duo apart? […]

Better Read Than Dead

Hello, kiddies!  Consdider this a friendly reminder from your slayborhood comic book guy that Walking Dead TP Volume 12 hits Forbidden Planet’s shelves today.  They call this blood-curdling tale of terror “Life Among Them.”

Red Mars

I’m a bit burned out by a few strenuous days at work, so nothing more today than what I’m currently reading (or re-reading in this case)  to escape from the OT grind… Kim Stanley Robinson’s […]

Manga And Magic; New Manga 7-21-10

So, today’s title is pretty self explanatory, oh yeah, manga is first on the block, followed by Magic: The Gathering, which I know isn’t exactly anime related like you guys are used to reading in my columns, but hey, this is the Manga and Gaming department up here on the second floor of Forbidden Planet NYC, I have a little bit of a duty to go on about whatever I deem necessary. Besides, to be perfectly frank, there are only a hand full of manga titles coming in this week, and I doubt I could fill this entire article with the stuff that is arriving. […]

How to Self-Publish Comic Books

New Comics vs San Diego Comic Con

I’ve been reading over past columns to make sure I don’t repeat myself. Still, there is a line I used last year that pretty much sums up my feelings this week. I’m not sure how improper it is to quote yourself, but here goes: “Seriously, San Diego Comic Con is like NOTHING you have ever experienced … and once again I shall not be going.” […]
