SFSX #1

I’ve been a long time fan of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals. The hilarious comic normalizes sexual activity which is often sensationalized. When I saw SFSX on this week’s list, I had high hopes it would be another sex positive comic from Image. With Tina Horn writing it, my expectations are even higher. Her past nonfiction work on sexual politics, queer identity, and cultural criticism has me eager to see her dive into the world of fiction. I’m especially curious about the queer, sci-fi sex worker rebellion at the core of the comic.

Monstress Volume 4

I was introduced to Monstress by my Rhetoric & Media Studies professor, Melanie Kohen. Three years later, I am still grateful for that. Sana Takeda’s highly detailed, fantastical art had me hooked. Marjorie Liu’s epic about a girl battling a monster within her has kept me invested for the past three volumes. I’m happy to finally get my hands on the fourth volume and see this industrial monster tale continue to build a frighteningly fantastical world.

Harleen #1

I’m a huge Harley Quinn fan. I particularly love the comics that develop her beyond the Joker – Harley Quinn: Hot in the City will always have a special place in my heart. With that in mind, Harleen is exactly what I’m looking for. While this comic includes Joker and Harley’s romance, Sejic is well aware that their dynamic is not healthy. Sejic also treats Harley as more than just a love interest. The joker is a chapter in the story. Harleen Quinzel is the whole book, and a beautifully drawn book at that.

Tales for a Halloween Night TP

Along with the list of horror movies I have, I’m trying to get my hands on as many scary comics as possible before Halloween. Tales for Halloween Night is the perfect treat this season. Fans of John Carpenter, Twilight Zone, and Crypt TV will especially like it. the book is reminiscent of sharing urban legends around a bonfire given its anthology structure. I can’t wait to read these tales on the subway ride home before my horror movie binge session.
