Rat Queens is the Best Comedy Team in Comics

Rat Queens

Picture for me your four favorite comedians. Whoever they may be, put them in a room. And imagine they’re playing an action/fantasy RPG like Dungeons & Dragons. Wouldn’t you want to be there for the adventure they’d create? With RAT QUEENS from Image Comics, you can be.

For years, we’ve enjoyed the bombastic adventures and banter-woven interplay of the randiest adventuring party in comics. There’s Dee the spellcaster escaped from a Lovecraftian death cult, Betty the candy-loving, dual knife wielding smidgen, Violet the female dwarf warrior, and Hannah, the rough approximation of what an all-powerful wizard would look like if they were your hard-partying friend that dropped out of college.

For years, the Rat Queens were the resident (and despised) adventuring party of the fictional city of Palisade. Kurtis J. Wiebe and a host of wonderful artists made each quest a joy. Whether it was facing off an invasion of tentacle monsters or falling in love with men named Orc Dave, every arc had all of the wit and wonder any D&D player would crave from a campaign.

It’s so difficult to translate what makes tabletop games fun into comic. Wiebe pulls it off with aplomb. He obviously has a ton of experience. RAT QUEENS is the best possible highlight reel from a series of epic fantasy adventures. It has all the things you love (fighting dragons) without the parts you hate (having to do math quickly). Also, unlike an RPG, you only need one person to read a comic book.

I would personally recommend RAT QUEENS to anyone who might be a fan of RPGs, swords & sorcery, ensemble comedies, comics… Listen, I think there are a lot of folks who will enjoy this book and I’d encourage them to pick it up. I even wrote an article about it, see? This week sees the release of the fifth volume of their escapades, “The Colossal Magic Nothing.”

It’s a dynamite arc, full of twists and turns and some of the finest and most creative moments in a series known for them. There’s also some incomparable fantasy art from Owen Geini. And as many laughs as you can stuff into a comic book.

RAT QUEENS VOLUME 5 – THE COLOSSAL MAGIC NOTHING absolutely deserves a place in your comics collection. It’s in mine.
