The Greatest X-Force of Them All

The perfect pairing of X-Forces new and old.

After a brief hiatus, X-Force returns to shelves this week with a brand new X-Force #1. The original line-up (Domino, Cannonball, Boom Boom, Shatterstar, Warpath) gets the band back together to avenge the death of their fallen leader, Cable. And such an auspicious occasion has me recall the finest X-Force story ever written.

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender is one of the finest team books in recent memory. With a murderer’s row of great artists including Esad Ribic and Jerome Opena, it’s a profound and beautiful story on the fringes of mutant society.

Wolverine leads a team including Psylocke, Archangel, Deadpool, and Your New Favorite Character Fantomex, getting their hands dirty in a way that can’t be traced back to the main X-teams for PR reasons. But there are still threats that need to be taken care of in a way that isn’t clean or pretty.

The first story begins with the discovery of a child version of Apocalypse. This version of the X-Men’s most powerful foe has yet to become the monster they know. Thus begins the ultimate “Do we kill Baby Hitler?” conundrum for the superhero set. Everything spins out from that ultimate decision. It’s as cunning, taught, and thrilling as these sorts of comics can be.
