Manga Drought 2010! What To Read When There Is No New Manga.

Jeez, I cannot believe this month. Last week all we get was one manga, and this week? Nothing. Well, okay there is one single item coming at us from TokyoPop, but I’m not sure if it can even be considered manga. And not for the usual reasons I don’t count half the stuff coming from TokyoPop as manga, this is going to be TokyoPop’s first legitimate single-issue comic book. Here’s the deal. You all love and remember Priest by Min-Woo Hyung (which technically makes it manhwa in the first place, but let’s not nit pick). Well coming out this week is the official comic for the upcoming Priest movie “Priest: Purgatory” that’s going to be starring Paul Bettany (Silas from The Da Vinci Code and the voice of Jarvis in Iron Man). Basically, A veil of evil threatens to engulf humanity, and one man stands in the way of the apocalypse: our hero, a fallen priest who sold his soul for the power to battle evil and fight for humanity’s redemption. GRADING COMIC BOOKS

Despite all evidence to the contrary let’s say you actually believe that comic book collecting is a profitable, enjoyable and easy way to make money. God help you. Now let’s take this absurdly preposterous scenario even a step further and say you found someone JUST AS delusional as yourself to buy your boxes upon heavy boxes of smelly, worthless comic books and finally get them out of your parent’s basement once and for all. […]

New Manga Release:There Can Be Only One!

Yeeeah this week’s title is pretty self-explanatory. That’s right, there is a book coming out. I can only stand to guess that this is because that very last week of July was a huge release week, immediately followed by the first week of August’s ginormous release schedule. On a completely unrelated note, according to the computer not underlining the word “ginormous” with a red dotted line, I believe it has been confirmed as an official real word. Thank you Miriam Webster. […]

New Comics and Great Stuff

I love cartoonist Corey Lewis, a.k.a. “the Reyy” even though he comes off as an arrogant, preening twerp. Check out his insufferably smug blog reyy.com and see what I mean. So much talent in such a scruffy mirror junkie. […]

How to Create Cool Comic Book Characters

Comic books are all the rage, and tomorrow’s star of the printed page will be the next big thing on the silver screen! Yep, Hollywood money is whipping up every able-bodied creator into a creative tizzy. WHO will create the next Iron Man, Batman and Jonah Hex so that they can be watered down into unrecognizable action figure grade silhouettes of themselves for a feckless public to mass consume? […]

New Comics Lack Some Luster

Last week I raged against the oncoming storm that is the Yogi Bear 3D CGI movie. A good friend and blogger, a.k.a. “Jim” of jimsmash.blogspot.com pointed out one of the posters for said celluloid turkey and the rather, awkward catch phrase it employs. […]

Officer Downe

I thought I’d check out what all the hubbub was about regarding this title as it got past me upon its release a few weeks ago.  Glad I finally caught up to it. I divide […]

Who are the X-Men?

Stan Lee had many astonishing insights as to what would sell comic books, not the least of which was to pander to his audience.

“If my merry band of Marvel marchers are nothing more than lily livered teenage freakazoids,” He must have thought, “Then I’ll make half the heroes in the pantheon of Marvel teenage milksops, too!” […]

Review: AMS-110 Geara Doga

After what seems like forever here at the FPNYC blog, we actually have a new Gunpla to discuss! We’ll be looking at the 1/144th scale AMS-110 Gear Doga Neo Zeon Mass Productive Mobile Suit, which aside from a long-ass name, is actually a pretty nifty kit. I’ll also be trying a new review format, so let me here what you think of it in the comment section. […]

Birds and Gods: Bird Superheroes Dos and Don’ts

Superheroes are thinly veiled caricatures of our own hopes and insecurities. Finding the right balance between subtly recognizing these deep psychological urges and making the character cool is the entire trick to creating interesting and compelling characters. Think of it like making your first mixed drink: You want enough booze in there to knock your socks off, but put too much in and it will taste like liquorices flavored Scope. […]

Better Read Than Dead

Hello, kiddies!  Consdider this a friendly reminder from your slayborhood comic book guy that Walking Dead TP Volume 12 hits Forbidden Planet’s shelves today.  They call this blood-curdling tale of terror “Life Among Them.”

How to Self-Publish Comic Books

Brian Michael Bendis was an unloved worthless nothing before he self published a few crime comic books. Now? He’s Marvel’s top writer, recognized by dozens of people the world over and he probably got to meet Stan Lee once or twice. […]

New Comics vs San Diego Comic Con

I’ve been reading over past columns to make sure I don’t repeat myself. Still, there is a line I used last year that pretty much sums up my feelings this week. I’m not sure how improper it is to quote yourself, but here goes: “Seriously, San Diego Comic Con is like NOTHING you have ever experienced … and once again I shall not be going.” […]
