Halloween Belongs to Emma Frost & Magik

Leah Williams brings us a dynamic duo of powerful X-Men.

X-Men Black Emma Frost #1

“All the X-Men are gay” is the rallying cry of Leah Williams. She’s a mutant maestro, a visible bisexual, and Emma Frost’s #1 fan. She was the writer behind X-Men Gold Annual #1, which saw the original Excalibur reunited after a lengthy absence. It was one of the finest issues of the entire run of X-Men Gold and signaled what Williams was capable of. And with a pair of one shots launching on the spooooookiest day of the year, it seems as if things are looking up.

What if Magik was Sorcerer Supreme?

Rounding out Marvel’s month-long What If? series is a special issue all about Magik. Once the baby sister of Colossus, Illyana Rasputin was pulled into the dimension of Limbo, where she aged seven years almost instantly. In this reality that could have been, Magik runs away from home to wind up not a New Mutant but a Sorcerer Supreme.

WHAT IF? MAGIK finds art in Filipe Andrade (Figment, Deadpool). Andrade has a tremendous gift for the cosmic and mystical. Rocket Raccoon and Groot is loaded with stellar, otherworldly visuals. His arc on Old Man Logan is stuffed with bizarre sights that I hope we see loads of in MAGIK.

X-Men Black Emma Frost

Then there’s X-MEN BLACK: EMMA FROST. The month-long mutant musing on the greatest foes in X is coming to a close with one of the most beloved, debated, and mishandled antagonists around: Emma Frost. The Hellfire Club supervillain turned bastion of mutantkind has had some, uh, decisions made with her character arc in the last few years. Some ill-thought through, character-assassinating decisions made that turned her into a murderous maniac because her boyfriend died. X-MEN BLACK: EMMA FROST is an issue-long look into what makes this complex character kick.

On art is the capital gee Great Chris Bachalo (Doctor Strange, Spectacular Spider-Man). Bachalo will bring his unmistakable style to this triumphant closing issue of X-MEN BLACK. Being no stranger to mutants after a lengthy stint on Wolverine & the X-Men among others, Bachalo rounds out a dream team that will make this an absolute Can’t Miss.

Today, you can support creators new and revered alike with a couple of great comics. Grab WHAT IF? MAGIK and X-MEN BLACK: EMMA FROST from our shelves right here at Forbidden Planet.
