Girl on Film

Have you ever been torn between what you’re passionate about and what’s stable? Haunted by thoughts like “am I good enough,” “is this the right thing,” and “have I wasted my time?” Girl on Film explores the insecurities artists and storytellers face throughout their careers. The graphic novel is a deeply personal exploration of Cecil Castellucci’s continuous transformation, both as an artist and human. I wish I had a book like this in high school and college. I’m glad to have it now as I get to know myself better as a media maker. I highly recommend this to any artist looking for inspiration or anybody trying to find their way.

The Vision: The Complete Collection

Early in college, I saw the first issue of The Vision in my local comic store. The hyper-Americana cover featuring Vision and his perfectly synthetic family instantly caught my attention. What further drew me in was how Tom King leaned into the sci-fi genre to tell a story about the dangers of forced normalcy. The Visions, similar to Frankenstein’s monster and the androids in Blade Runner, are trying to understand their existence in a world that views them as threats. The art and story are pulled straight from The Twilight Zone, cementing the comic as one of Marvel’s most recent stand outs. After several years, Marvel has finally released the complete edition. I’m thrilled to own and revisit this comic again and again.

Our Encounters with Evil: Adventures of Professor J.T. Meinhardt and His Assistant Mr. Knox

I was excited to learn that Professor J.T. Meinhardt and Mr. Knox were getting a spin off comic with Our Encounters with Evil. I fell in love with its predecessor, Mr. Higgins Comes Home, a few years ago. Mignola succeeds yet again in writing a story that feels like a Gothic classic, and Warwick Johnson’s art creates a dark, whimsical folk tale. The cherries on top are the protagonists: Professor J.T. Meinhardt and Mr. Knox. These two are both brilliant, dangerous monster hunters and delightful buffoons. Mr. Higgins Comes Home was such a charming read, so I immediately got my hands on Our Encounters with Evil as soon as I could, finding it equally delightful. I can’t wait to go on another good old fashioned monster hunt with this lovable, lethal duo.

Un/Sacred #1

I love Mirka Andolfo’s art, specifically her work on DC Comics Bombshells. She knows how to empower her characters through their sensuality, which is why I am curious about her sex positive comic following the lustful love story between an angel and devil. I’m a sucker for rom-coms that lean into the absurd and fantastical, like Sex Criminals and My Boyfriend is a Bear. Un/sacred joins these comics with Andolfo’s raunchy, cartoonish art and her over the top leading characters, who love each other dearly despite being polar opposites. If you’re in need for something silly, sweet, and sexy, check out Andolfo’s first issue.
