Shuri #1: A Black Panther Standout Opens a New Hit

The following originally ran in the Weekly Planet 10/17/18.

How could you possibly be surprised?

After Black Panther positively destroyed the worldwide box office, it’s been all hands on deck for the World of Wakanda. Plans for a sequel were quickly greenlit, characters like Klaue & M’baku quickly regained prominence in the comics, and several key players are getting their own headlining gigs. The Dora Milaje were the key players in Wakanda Forever. Killmonger has his own series coming up in a few months. But the most intriguing (at least for me) has got to be SHURI.

That’s right! The fan favorite leads her own title series starting this very week! Long T’Challa’s tech super genius sister, Shuri regained the public eye after Letitia Wright was the biggest scene stealer in a movie full of them. Though she’s always been happier in the lab than on the throne, movie fans might be surprised to hear that Shuri herself was the Black Panther for her own mighty reign. And after spending some time traveling the spirit world, she’s finally back on Earth and ready to defend Wakanda. With T’Challa off in outer space, she’s needed now more than ever.

SHURI comes to us courtesy of the incredible literary mind of Nnedi Okorafor, who seems perfectly matched to this book. Okorafor is a phenomenal, award-winning author. Her novel Who Fears Death was showered with accolades. Her works (like the Binti trilogy or The Shadow Speaker) prove that she has a handle on things as varied as the inner lives of young people, societal hierarchies, science fantasy… Why, that sounds just perfect for a book like this!

Art duties fall to the unique and unmatched Leonardo Romero (Hawkeye, Captain America). Romero is a standout in the comics scene. He’s immediately identifiable and infinitely flexible. Whether you want an action sequence or an intimate, funny conversation, Romero is your guy. He positively wowed me on Hawkeye and put a great spin on Mark Waid’s more recent Captain America fable. Without a doubt, this book is going to be beautiful.

SHURI #1 is on our stands now. She stole the show, now watch her steal away onto your pull list.
