The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (Funnily Enough) Cannot Be Beat

TUSG #35

The following originally ran in the Weekly Planet 8/8/18.

For three and a half years, one book has held the undisputed title as The Funniest Comic. It’s packed with action, endless surprises, and nuts. Without fail, amidst invasions from Galactus, Civil Wars II, and Secret Empires, but one comic has maintained an unbearable lightness of being and stayed its delightful course. The Merc with the Mouth may try, but he does not hold a candle to Doreen Green aka THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL.

Armed with naught but her wits and the ability to talk to squirrels (well, I suppose anyone can talk to squirrels but only Squirrel Girl can make herself be understood), Doreen Green has faced many of the Marvel Universe’s greatest foes. She took down Doctor Doom in
her very first appearance. She stopped a bank robbery AND Whiplash ON HER WAY to stopping Galactus. She’s a better hero than we deserve and she is absolutely the one we need.

Along her many journeys, she’s developed quite the following. Her noble squirrel sidekick Tippy Toe is always with her in battle. She’s fought alongside the noble Chipmunk Hunk. Her best frenemy is Kraven the Hunter. Any superhero book would be thrilled to have a supporting cast as good as this one.

Writer Ryan North is a gem and has made this book likewise. He fills every issue of THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL with verve and wit. There’s a rarely a joke that doesn’t land. On the rare occasion there is, we’re on to the next one before the reader is any the wiser. The
most recent artist to join North on the book is Derek Charm, whose particular *ahem* charms are perfectly suited to the wonderful world North has created.

This week, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #35 comes to your friendly neighborhood Forbidden Planet. Squirrel Girl and Kraven have successful evaded a prison sentence (don’t ask because I’d hate to
spoil), but that only means Kraven is a wanted fugitive again. And you know Spider-Man loves him a wanted fugitive. Can Squirrel Girl stop these longtime foes from squaring off? Only THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #35 will tell! And if you’ve never read this series, then what the heck are you waiting for?? There are so many wonderful volumes for you to pick up and enjoy!

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL: it’s the perfect antidote to life.
