Val’s Toy Chest- Grease is the Word

1978’s Grease is not your typical topic for a comic shop newsletter/blog, but this year marks the 40th(!) Anniversary of the film and of course there are now Funko POPs for the film. Though the line is not all-encompassing by any means, you do get the two main characters, Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy and John Travolta’s Danny in two different styles each. Sandy is featured in her schoolgirl outfit from the beginning of the film while Danny is dressed in his white t-shirt, black pants and black jacket, then from the end of the film, we get Danny in his letterman sweater and Sandy in her black “bad girl” outfit. I know Funko has had these in the works for a while, so it is nice to see that they finally found the right time to get these out there. These have been doing fairly well, so it looks like Grease is still the word.

This week’s new toys are mostly POP, including Monsters Inc POPs of Sully, Boo, Roz and Chef; The Smallville POPs that I mentioned last week, though we are still waiting on our balance of Lois Lane and the Clark Kent that has the Superman shirt on underneath; Weird Al Yankovic gets his POP due as well with the latest addition to the POP Rocks line- he should hopefully be on our shelves by the time you read this article.

Restocks this week include: a limited number of Black Panther Marvel Legends, in case you haven’t had a chance to get any of the figures from the record shattering film yet. The DC Icons Justice League set from DC Collectibles is another item we will have back on our shelves. This piece is perfect for those who want a whole team on their shelves in one-shot as you get Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Aquaman for the price of approximately four figures. Animated Nightwing and New 52 Wonder Woman figures will also be making a return to our shelves in time for Free Comic Book Day next weekend(May 5th).

There also happens to be a huge movie coming out this weekend- Avengers: Infinity War!  We have some merchandise available to commemorate the film including T-Shirts, figures, a limited supply of POP vinyl as well as the Mystery Minis. Feel free to come on down and check it out.

Lastly, in keeping with the 70’s nostalgia, I had a chance to meet Charlie’s Angels star, Jaclyn Smith (whose character Kelly Garrett will be seen in Dynamite’s Charlie’s Angels comic set to debut in June) over the weekend at a meet and greet event and she was an absolute delight. Definitely has me excited for more adventures from the women of the Townsend Agency.

Anyway that’s it for me this week- see you soon!
