Val’s Toy Chest- Toy Fair 2019 DC Reveals

Originally appeared in the Weekly Planet dated 2/26/19

DC Comics didn’t have the strongest showing at Toy Fair this year, though there was some fairly big news about the license going into Toy Fair. Mattel will no longer hold the license for the “boy’s” and collector’s divisions of action figures after the end of this year. McFarlane Toys will handle the collector’s lines including 7″ figures and some rumored collaboration with DC Collectibles. No new figures from this new toyline have been shown yet, but we should expect to see some new stuff around San Diego Comic Con time. The boy focused lines are in the hands of Spin Master starting in 2020. Mattel will continue with the new iteration of DC Super Hero Girls and is also expected to be able to make other dolls of DC properties.

Mattel isn’t completely done yet as they showed off 5 new figures for their Multiverse line which should be closing out the year. Figures of Batman and the Joker inspired by the 1989 Toy Biz line, Red Robin from DC Rebirth, a very Bruce Timm/Paul Dini influenced classic Poison Ivy and a classic jumpsuited Riddler. It is unknown where the previously shown Flashpoint Aquaman, Rebirth Hawkgirl, Black Canary and Mammoth figures will end up but hopefully they will feature in the line before Mattel loses the license.

DC Collectibles didn’t have too many new action figures to show off, but they did have a pair of new Red Hood figures to show off from their Essentials line and their Animated Series line. They also had an animated Azrael Batman, Deathstroke and Armored Batman on display. New for 2019 is the DC Luchador line which features stylized versions of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Deathstroke, Cheetah and Metallo as Mexican wrestlers. It is a pretty cool looking line with nice bright colors and larger bodies than we are used to with superhero toys.

Not much other DC stuff was shown, though there were a few new gallery figures including the Atom and two different Batwoman figures from Diamond Select.

New figures this week: NECA King Kong vs Godzilla 1962 Godzilla, Pan’s Labyrinth Ofelia, Scuba Crash Bandicoot and Well House Pennywise from It 2017 have all arrived to join your growing NECA figure collection. Next week we will look at NECA, Mezco and more in my Toy Fair 2019 wrap up! Catch you then!
