Venoms Collide In Venomverse #1

Venoms don't play well together. Well, they better because Marvel's banking on it!

Venomverse Marvel Comics Venom

When one Marvel event ends, another begins. However, this is no mere intra-superhero fist fest that promises to change everything you thought you knew. No, Venomverse is one of the most slap-dashed put together stories you could ever imagine. Based on the success of the “Venomized” covers back in March of this year, the House of Ideas thought it had a bright one: Create a conflict bringing together a lot of different heroes who bonded with the Venom symbiote instead of Eddie Brock. Look, there are worse ideas. And damn if it’s not cool to see characters like Captain America, X-23, or Deadpool bonded with the gooey goodness. Plus it’s a team-up like Spiderverse was, which was a cool story, and they’re going to be doing a lot of kickass fighting against-DAMN IT, AM I ACTUALLY CARING ABOUT THIS?

Let’s get the premise out of the way. Apparently there’s a new species of Venom hunters called the Poisons. Not quite as elegant sounding as the Morluns but, hey, this story’s been rushed to the shelves. We may have to deal with less clever or deeper character explorations in order to hit the cool story beats…involving lots of Venoms going at it. Eddie Brock finds himself on a strange planet he doesn’t recognize and soon discovers a ragtag band of Venomized heroes. The original’s got no choice but to fight for all their lives in the hope of finding his way home…to eat people or supervillains or avoid church bells or whatever he does these days.

Is it a ripoff of other Marvel event plots? Sure. Is it a new event story right after Secret Empire’s just wiped away all of its potential payoffs? Yup, a week later! Is it still fracking cool to see a bunch of Venoms on a Warworld fighting each other and crazy monsters? Yeah…I feel dirty. Join me in the indulgence this week with Venomverse #1!
