The Red Goblin Wins In Amazing Spider-Man #799

ASM 799 Marvel Comics Red Goblin

The Red Goblin is coming! The Red Goblin is coming! The Red Goblin is…well, he’s won. Or has he? Nope, that joke didn’t work in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice when an apparently demented Lex Luthor said it and it doesn’t work here. But I mean, it does get the point across. As we ramp up to the end of Dan Slott’s amazing run on Amazing Spider-Man, the Red Goblin has arrived and is making the case for Peter Parker’s most dangerous enemy ever. Spider-Man is no more! Norman Osborn has beaten his arch nemesis. There’s little hope left for the Wall Crawler, or is there?

There have been a lot of ups and a few downs on this decade long story that Dan Slott has been crafting for Ol’ Webhead. Now though, there’s a twist on the classic formula of Spider-Man versus the Green Goblin. Having revealed to Peter Parker that the Carnage symbiote is in his bloodstream the Green Goblin identity is officially no more. Mr. Slott has given us his final take on that classic confrontation. We’re into new territory here. The goblin has chosen to take not merely his life but what he feels gives Parker his purpose: Spider-Man. Without the red and blue suit, the identity that has defined his entire life, Peter Parker is at his lowest point as he watches his arch nemesis laughing maniacally in victory.

Throughout this last decade one of the great tenets of Mr. Slott’s many adventures has been Peter living up to his potential. First, there was Horizon Labs. Then came Parker Industries. Even in his current position at the Daily Bugle there’s a sense that the lovable loser is no more. What Mr. Slott has revealed is that Peter Parker is a force to be reckoned with all his own. He’s legit one of the smartest men in the Marvel Universe. Now, the web shooters are off, what will a Peter Parker without the restraints of Spider-Man accomplish to stop his most deadly foe? Find out in Amazing Spider-Man #799 this week!
